Most visitors to Lake Toya stay in Toyako Onsen, the hot-spring town on the lake's south shore. It has the hotels, the cruise pier and the lakefront. One thing catches people out: JR Toya Station is not in the onsen town or on the lakeshore. From the station you still need a local bus or a taxi.
Getting there: direct bus, JR plus bus, or car

| Option | Time on board | Booking | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct bus from Sapporo (Donan Bus) | About 2 hours 45 minutes to Toyako Onsen. | All seats are reserved; book well ahead. | Book to Toyako Onsen, not Toya Mizuno Eki on the north shore. |
| JR to Toya Station, then local bus | Roughly 15–30 minutes for the bus, depending on the service. | Check the bus times for your date, both ways. | Add the train ride, waiting at the station and walking. |
| Car via Route 230 | About 2 hours 10 minutes from Sapporo, via Jozankei and Nakayama Pass. | Ask your hotel about parking. | Not the expressway. Snow, ice, traffic and breaks add time. |
On 16 October 2026 the direct bus cost ¥3,700 one way for adults. The local bus between Toya Station and Toyako Onsen was ¥400 in the timetable in force from 1 October 2026 (PDF, Japanese).
The times above are riding times only. Trains and buses at Toya Station don't always connect neatly, so check both the outbound and return bus tables on the official Lake Toya tourism site's access page before you commit. For whether a JR pass suits your trip, see our Hokkaido Rail Pass guide, but don't assume a pass covers the local bus.

Lake cruises: summer and winter
Board at Ekimae pier behind Hotel Grand Toya in Toyako Onsen, not at JR Toya Station.
- Summer (until 31 October): about 50 minutes staying aboard; Nakajima landing normally offered, conditions permitting.
- Winter (from November): about 45 minutes, no island landing. Check the operator's notices for the spring changeover.
- Adult fare: ¥1,800 (checked 16 October 2026).
As of 16 October 2026, the operator's home page also shows a notice from Toyako town that the Nakajima walking trail is closed because of giant hornets, with no end date given. The notice covers the trail, not the island as a whole or the cruises. If you hope to land and walk, check the operator's current notices first.

Two onsen hotels with different baths
Two editorial picks to show how bath settings differ, not a ranking or a record of our own stay. Check plans and bath hours on their official sites.

| Hotel | Baths | Suits you if | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyako Manseikaku Hotel Lakeside Terrace | Hoshinoyu on the 8th floor, with a lake-view, infinity-style outdoor bath; Tsukinoyu in the basement, with a garden bath. | You'd like two different bath settings in one stay. | Men's and women's sides alternate, so check which bath is yours at the time you want. |
| The Lakeview TOYA Nonokaze Resort | TENQOO, a panoramic open-air bath, and the EZOFUJI view bath. | A wide, open view while you soak is your priority. | Private baths are booked separately; ask about availability and any charge for your plan. |
If a lake view from your room matters, confirm the room type, its view and your meal plan with the hotel when you book.
The stay search at the end of this page covers the wider Toyako area, including neighbouring towns. It isn't a booking link for either hotel above, so check that a hotel's address is in Toyako Onsen if you want to walk to the lakefront and pier.
A car-free day, planned backwards
An editorial example of a car-free day trip, built around your ride home. The direct bus takes about 2 hours 45 minutes just to get there, and your time at the lake depends on the return timetable. A day trip suits a cruise and a lakefront stroll better than a slow bath.
- Fix your return first: book the direct bus both ways, or note the last bus from Toyako Onsen that connects with your train at Toya Station.
- Arrive in Toyako Onsen and have lunch near the lakefront.
- Take the cruise if the departures fit; allow time to board as well as the cruise itself.
- Walk along the lakefront if the weather and your return time allow; skip it if not.
- Be at your return stop with time to spare. In winter, leave more.
Stay the night for the baths and fireworks
A night in Toyako Onsen means you can bathe in the evening and again in the morning without watching the bus clock. In the 2026 season, the Long Run Fireworks are held over the Toyako Onsen lakefront every night from 28 April to 31 October, starting at 20:45 for about 20 minutes. Strong wind can cancel a show, and not every room has a view of it.
Planning one night without missing dinner or your onward train
An overnight stop works best when the hotel timetable, rather than a list of sights, sets the order. The following is a planning template, not a promised hotel service or a fixed connection.
- Before booking a dinner plan, check arrival limits. Ask for the latest check-in that still allows dinner, the last dinner seating and what happens if your bus or train is delayed. A room reservation does not mean a late meal will be kept for you. Save the hotel's contact details.
- On arrival, deal with bags before choosing a cruise. Ask whether the hotel accepts luggage before check-in and how far it is from your arrival stop and the pier. Choose a sailing only if boarding, the cruise and the walk back all fit before your agreed hotel arrival time. Move the cruise to the next day or skip it if they do not.
- On departure morning, start with the onward journey. For JR, work backwards from your train at Toya Station to the local bus, the walk to its stop and bag collection. Breakfast, bathing and checkout must fit before those steps; do not use the train departure as your hotel departure time.
- Treat a post-checkout cruise as optional. Confirm luggage collection hours and the available return sailing if you land on Nakajima. Do not make the last workable connection depend on a boat operating exactly to plan.
When comparing a day trip with one night, replace a night elsewhere in your itinerary rather than simply adding a second room booking. Compare the room's meal inclusions, transport and luggage arrangements in the Hokkaido trip budget guide. With children, check meal times and bedding together using the family travel guide. If the next leg is a flight, allow separately for the journey to the airport, airline check-in and disruption; see the winter transport planning guide.
Winter at Lake Toya
The 2026 fireworks season ends on 31 October, so don't plan on fireworks in winter. From November the cruise switches to its winter service. Snow can delay buses, and Route 230 over Nakayama Pass can be icy, so leave a wide margin for your return. If you'd rather not rush, consider staying the night.
Questions
Is JR Toya Station on the lake?
No. It's a bus or taxi ride from Toyako Onsen, where the hotels and the cruise pier are.
Can cruises land on the islands?
Usually in summer, conditions permitting; winter cruises don't land. Check the trail notice above separately.
Do I need a car?
No. The direct bus or JR plus a local bus both reach Toyako Onsen. A car adds freedom but needs care on winter roads.
