Plan Asahiyama Zoo in winter from Sapporo or Asahikawa. Check 2026–27 opening dates, closures, bus connections, penguin-walk conditions and what to wear.

For a winter visit to Asahiyama Zoo, check the opening date first, then connect your transport to the shorter visiting day. From Sapporo, the journey continues beyond Asahikawa Station by local bus. An overnight stay in Asahikawa gives more flexibility if the zoo is a priority.

The penguin walk is a possible seasonal highlight, not a guaranteed daily event throughout winter. Make a plan you would enjoy even if the walk is not operating. Official information below was checked on 16 October 2026.

Winter 2026–27: opening hours and closed dates

The zoo's official calendar lists:

  • 11 November–29 December 2026: 10:30–15:30; last admission 15:00.
  • 2 January–7 April 2027: 10:30–15:30; last admission 15:00.
  • Closed 4–10 November 2026 and 30 December 2026–1 January 2027.
  • Special opening 5–7 February 2027: 10:30–20:30; last admission 20:00.

The February extension applies to those dates only. Check the latest calendar and notices before booking transport; do not carry summer hours into a winter itinerary.

Admission and the April 2027 price change

The official fee-change notice shows regular adult individual admission at ¥1,000 before the change, with junior-high-school children and younger free. Regular adult admission rises to ¥1,400 on 29 April 2027, after the winter season covered here. Do not use the winter price for a later summer trip.

Sapporo to Asahiyama Zoo without a car

Travel Sapporo → Asahikawa Station → Asahiyama Zoo. The zoo's access page gives about 90 minutes for the rail leg and about 40 minutes for the local bus. These are separate journey estimates; allow additional time for waiting, finding the stop and winter disruption.

The same page identifies station bus stand 6 and routes 41/47, with an adult one-way fare of ¥670 at the time checked. Verify the bus operator's current timetable before choosing your train.

A seasonal timetable needs its own date check. On 16 October, the bus operator's published timetable was labelled for the period ending 3 November 2026. It is not confirmation of winter departure times. Check the winter version when planning November onward, including the return from the zoo.

Choose your return bus before arriving and leave a margin before the train. A late departure from Sapporo can make the short winter visiting window feel rushed. If the zoo is the main purpose of the day, travel to Asahikawa the previous evening or take an early connection rather than fitting it after another distant attraction.

Asahikawa Station or the airport: choose the correct route

Staying near Asahikawa Station reduces the number of changes on zoo day. Leave larger luggage at your accommodation if arranged, and take a day bag that keeps your hands free on snowy paths.

Do not assume the airport has a daily direct winter bus to the zoo. The zoo's access page describes a seasonal airport service; confirm service dates with the operator. If there is no suitable direct service, compare a route via Asahikawa Station with an arranged taxi, allowing for the extra transfer.

From Sapporo, a sightseeing bus can be another option when a tour is actually running on your date. Check the advertised pickup, time inside the zoo, ticket inclusion and cancellation terms. A tour appearing in a directory does not establish current seat availability.

Day trip or an Asahikawa night: compare the whole itinerary

Choose the base before booking a non-flexible train or hotel. A night in Asahikawa moves the longer rail journey to the previous day; it does not remove that journey or guarantee that the zoo bus will run.

  • Keep your Sapporo base if the confirmed outward bus gives you enough viewing time and the return connection leaves room for delays. This avoids packing and changing hotels, especially when the following day starts in Sapporo.
  • Replace a Sapporo night with Asahikawa if an early start from Sapporo would be difficult or the zoo is the trip's priority. Compare the change in room cost, any cancellation charge, luggage storage and station-to-hotel travel. Do not count a whole extra hotel night if you are replacing one; do count both rooms if you keep the Sapporo booking.
  • Consider a second Asahikawa night only if the next day's route also fits. It removes the need to catch a long-distance train immediately after the zoo, but adds accommodation and may shift another day's transport. It still cannot promise a penguin walk.

Write down four times from the applicable timetable: leaving your accommodation, reaching the zoo, leaving the zoo and reaching your evening accommodation. Subtract food and warming breaks from the time inside the zoo. If the remaining visit is too short for your priorities, change the base or date instead of relying on the last bus and a tight train transfer.

For a family, calculate each traveller's rail and bus charges separately: free zoo entry for a child does not mean free transport. Use the Hokkaido budget worksheet to compare the same group and the same number of nights, and the family-trip guide for meal, rest and luggage planning. Prepare the outdoor day bag with the winter packing list before leaving larger bags at a confirmed storage location.

When is the penguin walk?

The zoo's official FAQ says the walk requires enough snow to form its course and typically runs from late December to mid-March. Dates and frequency depend on conditions; the zoo announces times when it begins.

For 2026–27, use the new season's announcement when published. An announcement for December 2025 is not confirmation of December 2026 dates or times. Check the day's official schedule and staff notices on arrival. If it runs, arrange the rest of your visit around the confirmed time; if it does not, keep your animal-viewing plan flexible.

A practical winter visit plan

  • Before leaving your accommodation: check zoo notices, transport operations and the return connection. Save the relevant timetable for offline use.
  • On arrival: read the day's schedule and choose a small set of priority exhibits. Leave room for warming breaks instead of treating the grounds as a race.
  • During the visit: move between outdoor viewing and available indoor spaces. Animal displays can end earlier than the park's closing time, so see your priorities first.
  • Before heading back: allow time to reach the bus stop and queue. Keep the booked train connection flexible enough for a delayed road journey.

Wear footwear with suitable grip, warm layers, gloves and a hat. Carry a spare pair of socks and protect your phone from cold while keeping access to your tickets. With children, reduce the number of planned stops and keep breaks flexible.

For the rest of the trip, compare Hokkaido in winter and the winter itinerary. Give the zoo its own day rather than adding a long winter drive through Biei afterwards.

For your other days, our Hokkaido activity guides group skiing, onsen and drift-ice trips by type. Plan distant resorts as separate days, not as add-ons to the zoo.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit from Sapporo as a day trip? Yes, if the outward and return connections fit the opening day. Build the whole journey through Asahikawa Station and leave time for the local bus; staying in Asahikawa removes the longer rail leg that morning.

Will the penguins walk in November? Do not plan on it. Opening for winter and having enough snow for the walk are different conditions. Use the zoo's seasonal announcement.

Is New Year's Day open? The published closure covers 30 December to 1 January. For this season, regular opening resumes on 2 January 2027.

Should I arrive at the last-admission time? That leaves little viewing time. Plan to arrive substantially earlier and use the admission cutoff as a deadline, not a suggested start.
