January is the heart of Hokkaido's winter. Sapporo averages a daily high of -0.4°C and a low of -6.4°C, and Kutchan, the town that includes Niseko's Grand Hirafu, gets 253 cm of snowfall in an average January (JMA climate normals, 1991–2020). In the second half of the month the drift ice cruises open on the Okhotsk coast: the Garinko-go in Monbetsu from January 15, 2027 and the Aurora in Abashiri from January 20.

Skiing in January

January sits inside Niseko's Peak Season, when the adult 1-day All Mountain Pass is ¥13,500 (December 24 – February 28), and night skiing runs from December 12 to March 22. It is also, in our Niseko month-by-month guide, the single most popular month for powder, so accommodation in Hirafu books out early. Snowfall figures back up the reputation: Kutchan's January average of 253 cm is nearly double Sapporo's 137 cm.
Getting to the mountains is the part that needs planning in January. Seasonal buses, booked transfers and trains each suit different parts of the valley; see our winter transport guide and where to stay in Niseko.
Drift ice from mid-January

The two icebreaker cruises on the Okhotsk coast start in the second half of January. The Garinko-go in Monbetsu runs daily from January 15 to March 31, 2027; bookings opened on October 9, 2026, and cancellation fees apply even if you cancel because there is no ice. The Aurora in Abashiri lists January 20 to March 31; adults pay ¥5,000 in January on the large ship, and on a day without ice it cruises to Cape Notoro instead. Our Hokkaido drift ice guide compares the two.
Planning tips for January
These are our suggestions, not official advice.
- Book Niseko early. January is Peak Season and the most popular month for powder.
- Plan drift ice for the end of the month or later. The cruises only start on January 15 and 20, and the Okhotsk coast is a separate stay from Sapporo; two nights there gives you a second chance if the ice is not in.
- Dress for below-freezing days. In most of Hokkaido the average January high is below 0°C. Layers, waterproof boots with grip, a hat and gloves matter more than one heavy coat.
- Thinking about February instead? The Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4–11, 2027; see Hokkaido in February.
