Soup curry is a thin, spiced broth served with large pieces of meat and vegetables, usually with rice on the side. It is easy to fit into a Sapporo day once you decide where you will be at lunchtime. This guide covers choosing an area, three places from two brands, ordering, and planning around queues and travel time. For the city's other dishes, see what to eat in Sapporo.
Choose the area before the shop
Pick a shop near your morning sights or your next stop rather than crossing town for one name. Odori and Tanukikoji suit a central sightseeing day, and the Nijo Market side works with a walk along the Sosei River. A shop out in Atsubetsu Ward needs its own journey from the city centre, so give it a day with time to spare.
Two SAMA branches and GARAKU
The table lists two SAMA branches and GARAKU's Sapporo main shop: three places from two brands. They are examples based on official shop information, not a ranking and not a report of our own meals.
On a small screen, scroll the table horizontally to compare all columns.
| Shop | Area and address | Official page notes | How it fits a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAMA Sapporo Odori branch | Tanukikoji, central Sapporo. Elio Tanukikoji 2F, Minami 3-jo Nishi 5-chome 33, Chuo-ku | Afternoon break; closed second Wednesdays; no parking | Lunch on a central Odori or Tanukikoji day |
| GARAKU Sapporo main shop | Nijo Market side. Presant Minami 3 Higashi 2 B1F, Minami 3-jo Higashi 2-chome 6-1 | Afternoon break; may close once the soup runs out | Pair with Nijo Market or a Sosei River walk |
| SAMA Oyachi main branch | Atsubetsu Ward, outside the centre. Kami-Nopporo 1-jo 2-chome 4-43, Atsubetsu-ku | Afternoon break; closed second Wednesdays | A day with time for the trip out from the city centre |
Older listings may show a different address for GARAKU's main shop; use the current one above. Its official shop list does not settle reservations or payment; check before you go. SAMA's two branches are separate shops at different addresses; check the page for the branch you plan to visit. All three official pages were checked on 15 October 2026. Branch status, hours and menus can change.
How to order
Ordering is usually a short series of choices, but the options vary by shop and not every shop offers each one. Check the current menu at the shop you visit.
- Main: chicken, pork, vegetables and so on.
- Soup: some shops offer more than one broth.
- Spice level: each shop uses its own scale, so a number from one shop does not transfer to another. Even the mildest level may still contain spices. If you are unsure, ask staff which level they suggest for a first visit rather than starting at the top.
- Rice: where sizes are offered, choose with the rest of the day in mind.
- Extras: before ordering toppings, ask staff how large the base portion is.

Leave room and time
A bowl with rice can be filling. If you plan sweets, a parfait or a market snack later, order a smaller rice portion or fewer toppings.
Payment methods and seat booking differ by branch, so ask the branch you plan to visit what it currently accepts, and carry some cash in case. Expect to wait at busy times, and have a nearby second choice instead of building the afternoon around one queue.
A sample lunch and walk
As an editorial example: spend the morning around Odori Park, choose either SAMA's Odori branch or GARAKU on the Nijo Market side for lunch, then walk off lunch through Tanukikoji or along the Sosei River. The Oyachi main branch is not part of this walk; plan it for a separate day or half-day with its own travel to Atsubetsu. If you are catching a train the same day, keep a generous buffer before departure; a queue can use up time you meant for the connection.

Families and dietary needs
With children, ask about portion sizes, sharing and chairs rather than assuming every shop has a children's menu. For allergies or dietary restrictions, ask about the actual ingredients in the broth, sauces and toppings. A vegetable name on the menu does not tell you how the soup is made.
