Three indoor options for a wet day in Sapporo: AOAO SAPPORO in the centre, Sapporo Science Center in Shin-Sapporo and Shiroi Koibito Park in Miyanosawa. How to choose by hotel and interests, what needs booking, where the outdoor walk is, plus meal plans, luggage collection and departure-day timing.

Rain in Sapporo is a good excuse for one indoor venue and a relaxed day around it. Three places come up most often: the AOAO SAPPORO aquarium in the city centre, Sapporo Science Center in Shin-Sapporo to the east, and Shiroi Koibito Park in Miyanosawa to the west. They lie in three different directions, so trying to see all of them in one day turns into a transport exercise. This page explains how each one works on a wet day so you can pick the one that suits your hotel, your group and the time you have.

Opening days, hours and ticket conditions change, so confirm them on the official pages linked below before you go. Sources checked 17 October 2026.

Where the outdoor walk is

Each venue has a station exit and a final stretch on foot, and they differ. Do not assume the whole route from your hotel is under cover.

  • AOAO SAPPORO is on floors 4 to 6 of the moyuk SAPPORO building, about three minutes on foot from Odori subway station and one minute from the Tanukikoji streetcar stop, according to the official access page. There is no dedicated car park.
  • Sapporo Science Center is opposite exit 1 of Shin-Sapporo station on the Tozai subway line; from JR Shin-Sapporo it is about five minutes on foot through the Sunpiazza building, per the centre's access page. The subway exit is the shorter option in bad weather.
  • Shiroi Koibito Park is about seven minutes on foot from Miyanosawa station at the western end of the Tozai line, per the official access notice. The park's access page states that no free shuttle is operated, so plan on the walk from the station or your own transport. Part of the park is an outdoor garden, so bring rain gear if you want to see it as well.

If the forecast worsens through the day, do the walk in the morning and spend the afternoon inside. If it improves, start with the indoor part and leave anything outdoors, such as the park garden or a stroll through the centre, for later.

Which venue suits which trip

Staying around Odori or Tanukikoji? The central option is usually the easiest, and lunch and shops are close by afterwards. From Sapporo Station, check the actual route from your hotel to the door; the Chi-Ka-Ho underground walkway covers the stretch to Odori but not every hotel entrance. If you are still choosing where to stay, our Sapporo hotel-area guide compares the districts.

Travelling with children who like hands-on exhibits, or keen on a planetarium? The Science Center is the natural fit, with a subway ride to Shin-Sapporo either way. The exhibit floors are untimed, while the planetarium runs as a chosen show slot, so it suits a day when you can commit to a time. The family-trip guide covers rest breaks and meal timing.

After sweets, a shop and a garden, and happy to ride out west? Shiroi Koibito Park combines paid indoor exhibits and bookable experiences with free areas, and a visit with lunch fills a half day comfortably.

Whichever you choose, give it the day rather than squeezing in a second venue across town.

AOAO SAPPORO: central and quick to reach

AOAO SAPPORO is an urban aquarium on floors 4 to 6 of moyuk SAPPORO, according to the official guide page. With Odori station about three minutes away and the Tanukikoji streetcar stop about one minute away, it keeps the time outdoors short when the rain is heavy.

Check tickets before you set out. The official ticket page says on-site sales may be restricted when the aquarium is crowded, and that advance-sale dates are released in stages. On a wet weekend or holiday many people have the same idea, so look at advance availability for your date rather than counting on buying at the door.

The building is a commercial complex, so there are places to shop and eat nearby; confirm hours yourself rather than assuming a particular restaurant is open. For lunch within a short walk, use the Sapporo food guide.

Sapporo Science Center: exhibits plus a timed planetarium

The centre sits in Shin-Sapporo on the east side of the city. The exhibit floors have no time slot, but the planetarium does: the official reservation page explains that you choose a show time, and the FAQ adds that you can see the exhibits before or after your show, and that online tickets cannot be changed or cancelled. Buy the planetarium slot once you are sure when you can arrive. If you do not read Japanese, check the show's language and content on the official page before booking.

The centre's visitor guide publishes a calendar, and closures are not limited to Mondays. Check it for your actual date, especially around holidays.

Food needs a plan. The FAQ states that there is no restaurant inside, but that eating in the resting areas is permitted. Bring something, or eat near the station before you go in. For many families the exhibits alone fill a morning; add the planetarium if a show time fits your child's meal and rest rhythm.

Shiroi Koibito Park is the confectionery maker's park in Miyanosawa. The official counter page distinguishes the free areas, including the garden and shop, from the paid exhibit areas. On a wet day, plan around the indoor exhibits and experiences, and decide on the garden walk according to the weather.

Hands-on experiences such as sweets-making are booked through the official booking page. For each plan you are interested in, check whether admission includes the experience or whether a separate reservation or extra charge applies, and reserve early on a day when other visitors are also looking for an indoor plan. Before you travel, read the park's current notices; at the time of writing they include a renovation notice for the garden restaurant, and any changes to areas or facilities appear there. A closed facility does not mean the park itself is closed.

What to book before you leave the hotel

  • AOAO SAPPORO: check advance ticket availability for your date; on-site sales may be restricted when crowded.
  • Sapporo Science Center: only the planetarium needs a slot, and online tickets cannot be changed or cancelled. Exhibits do not need a time.
  • Shiroi Koibito Park: for each plan you want, check whether admission includes the experience or a separate reservation or extra charge applies; free areas need no ticket.

A timed planetarium show and a timed sweets workshop on the same day, at opposite ends of the city, is the kind of plan that fails when a train is delayed. One booking is enough.

Lunch, luggage and your flight

Settle lunch as part of the plan. The Science Center has no restaurant, so eat near Shin-Sapporo first or bring food for the resting areas. In the centre, the AOAO SAPPORO building and the surrounding streets give you choices once you have confirmed hours. At Shiroi Koibito Park, read the current notices before relying on a specific restaurant.

Leave suitcases at the hotel or in station lockers rather than carrying them through exhibit floors. On an arrival or departure day, Shin-Sapporo also has a JR station, so the Science Center can fit on the way to or from New Chitose if your train stops there; confirm the stopping pattern and luggage storage with JR Hokkaido.

On departure day, work back from your airline's check-in and security deadlines and allow for the subway or JR ride, the walk and collecting luggage from the hotel. A timed show or a booked workshop is a poor fit for the last hours before a flight. Our getting-around guide explains how subway, streetcar and JR tickets differ.

Severe weather: check transport first

Typhoon-season storms, heavy snow and strong wind affect JR, buses, the subway and streetcars differently. Before leaving the hotel, check the operator you plan to use as well as the venue's own page. If warnings are in force, choose the venue nearest your hotel or stay in. Booked tickets follow each venue's own rules; the Science Center's online tickets cannot be changed or cancelled, so decide on a show only when you are confident about the day. In winter, the winter transport guide explains how disruption is announced.

If your wet day was meant to be an Otaru or onsen excursion, this page is the fallback: swap the outing rather than forcing it, as explained in day trips from Sapporo and the three-day Sapporo and Otaru route.

Half-day plans to adapt

  • Staying in the centre: AOAO SAPPORO if tickets are available, then lunch nearby. Between Sapporo Station and Odori, the Chi-Ka-Ho underground walkway reduces outdoor walking.
  • A morning in Shin-Sapporo: the Science Center exhibits, with lunch near the station before or after. Add a show if a slot is free and the time fits.
  • An afternoon in Miyanosawa: Shiroi Koibito Park's indoor exhibits, with the garden only if the rain eases. Book an experience in advance or skip it.
  • No venue at all: a long lunch from the food guide, a department-store afternoon and an early evening in. On a severe-weather day this is often the better plan.
