Compare Hokkaido ski-season opening and closing dates for 2026–27, resort announcements and snow conditions before choosing when and where to ski.

The first Hokkaido ski areas plan to open in the second half of November 2026. Sapporo Kokusai plans to open on November 20, Sapporo Teine on November 21, and the four Niseko United areas and Furano Ski Area on November 28. All are planned dates and depend on snow. Several other well-known resorts had not published their 2026–27 dates when we checked.

Sources: Sapporo Kokusai (opening, checked 19 October 2026) and the Sapporo Tourism Association's season-pass notice (season to May 5, published 7 September 2026); Sapporo Teine, Niseko United and Furano Ski Area (checked 12–16 October 2026). Opening days depend on snow, and early in the season only part of the terrain may be open.

Tomamu update and checks for other resorts

The Tomamu winter site's ski-area section, checked on October 28, 2026, lists December 1, 2026–April 5, 2027. These are the ski-area dates, not a combined promise for hotel stays, the Ice Village, lessons or every lift. Snow and operations can change the plan.

The same website also displays a daily-status panel last updated on April 5, 2026. That past-season panel is not today's slope report. Check the date attached to operating information, then confirm the actual lifts and terrain before departure. For a trip around opening day, compare cancellation conditions and a non-ski alternative before committing to transport and accommodation.

Rusutsu, Kiroro, Sapporo Bankei and Kamui were not fully reverified in this update. The old October 19 “not announced” list is no longer used as a current statement: check each resort's current-season announcement rather than infer dates from an older operations page or another resort's schedule.

When does the snow settle?

These are the Japan Meteorological Agency's average dates for August 1990 to July 2020, measured in the towns, not on the slopes. Snowfall rises steeply from November to December: an average 95 cm falls in Kutchan in November and 253 cm in December (JMA normals, 1991–2020). Our first snow guide has the dates for more towns, last winter's dates and the 2026 situation.

Choosing when to go

These are our suggestions, not official advice.

  • Late November and early December suit flexible skiers. Early Season costs less than Peak Season, but is not the cheapest period across the whole season (Niseko's adult 1-day All Mountain Pass is ¥8,800 from November 28 to December 11, and Early Season passes are not sold online), but how much terrain is open depends on the snow. The Final Season adult 1-day All Mountain Pass is ¥6,300 for April 5 – May 5, 2027; compare open areas and transport, not just the ticket price.
  • From mid-December the season is better established. Niseko night skiing runs from December 12, and Peak Season pricing starts on December 24.
  • For spring skiing, Sapporo Kokusai, Grand Hirafu, Annupuri and Furano all plan to run to May 5, 2027.

Our best time to ski Niseko guide compares the months in detail. For Furano's winter, see Furano and Biei in winter. For the trip around the skiing, see Hokkaido in November, Hokkaido in December, New Chitose Airport to Niseko and where to stay in Niseko.

For one ski day while keeping a Sapporo base, compare car-free ski day trips from Sapporo: Teine, Bankei and Kokusai have different transport arrangements. Check your chosen bus season separately from the resort opening date.
