Niseko town is the farming side of the famous ski region, spread across the slopes between the Niseko range and the Shiribetsu River with Mt. Yotei filling the eastern sky. The Annupuri and Niseko Village ski areas are here, but so are dairy farms, a strong farm-to-table food culture and the Goshiki hot spring high on the mountain. Skiers who want lift lines shorter than Hirafu's, summer hikers and rafters, and anyone who eats seriously will find this the better address.

What to see in Niseko
Niseko Annupuri
ニセコアンヌプリ
The mountain that gives the region its name. Its southern flank holds the Annupuri ski area, quieter than Hirafu, and in summer a trail climbs to the summit for the full view of Yotei across the valley.
Goshiki Onsen
五色温泉
A high mountain hot spring on the pass road below Mt. Iwaonupuri, with cloudy sulphur baths and a trailhead for the easiest summit walk in the range.
Michi-no-Eki Niseko View Plaza
道の駅ニセコビュープラザ
The roadside station on Route 5 doubles as the area's farmers' market, with vegetables and dairy from the surrounding farms and a clear line of sight to Mt. Yotei.
Arishima Memorial Museum
有島記念館
A town museum on the hill about the novelist who gave his Niseko farmland to its tenant farmers in 1922, an act that still shapes the town's identity. Good Yotei views from the grounds.
Getting to Niseko
Route 5 passes through the town and the Niseko Panorama Line (Prefectural Road 66) climbs over the range to Iwanai. Sapporo is about two hours by car and New Chitose Airport around two and a half; in winter direct buses run from the airport to the resorts. JR Niseko station is on the Hakodate Main Line's mountain section, still running but due to close once the Shinkansen is extended.
Shiribeshi region: JR links New Chitose Airport and Sapporo with Otaru. For Niseko, choose your hotel first, then a seasonal airport bus or JR with a local transfer. For Cape Kamui, change at Bikuni to the town bus and check whether it serves your stop on your date.
When to visit Niseko
December to March for powder, with January and February the deepest. June to September for climbing Annupuri and Yotei, rafting on the Shiribetsu and the farm stands. Early October turns the Panorama Line gold before the pass closes.
What to eat in Niseko
Dairy from the town's farms is the base: milk, cheese, yoghurt and soft-serve ice cream sold at the farm gate. Potatoes, asparagus and sweetcorn come off the volcanic soil, and the area's restaurants cook local before anything else. Yotei spring water runs through all of it.

Shiribeshi is a region of western Hokkaido made up of 20 municipalities, from Otaru and Yoichi on the coast to Kutchan and Niseko inland. In winter, Niseko and Kutchan are bases for skiing within sight of Mt. Yotei. In any season, Otaru's canal, stone warehouses and sushi counters make a day trip from Sapporo.
