Plan an Otaru winter day trip from Sapporo: Snow Light Path dates, weather, snowy walks and transport, with time for meals and the return journey.

Otaru's winter highlight is the Otaru Snow Light Path, which runs from February 6 to 13, 2027. The port town is about 30–35 minutes from Sapporo by rapid train, gets more snow than Sapporo, and suits a winter day trip or a night by the canal.

The Otaru Tourism Association lists the Otaru Snow Light Path for February 6–13, 2027, and describes it as a candle-lit winter event; further details are due to be announced. The dates overlap the Sapporo Snow Festival (February 4–11) and the Asahikawa Winter Festival (February 6–11), so February 6–11 is the busiest week for winter events in Hokkaido. Our winter festivals 2027 guide puts them side by side.

These are the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals. Otaru's temperatures are close to Sapporo's, but more snow falls and it lies deeper: an average February brings 117 cm of snow on the ground in Otaru, against 95 cm in Sapporo. In an average year snow first settles in Otaru on November 15, and the lasting snow cover runs from December 2 to April 8 (JMA Sapporo Regional Headquarters, normals for August 1990 to July 2020).

Getting there

Otaru is about 30–35 minutes from Sapporo by rapid train, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. In heavy snow, trains can be delayed; check the return train before you set out. Our Otaru day trip guide covers routes, luggage and timing.

Planning a winter visit

These are our suggestions, not official advice.

  • See the Snow Light Path in the evening. As a candle-lit event it is best after dark; fix your train back to Sapporo first, or stay the night in Otaru.
  • Pack for deeper snow than Sapporo. Boots with grip, waterproof layers and a hat; see our winter packing list.
  • Keep the walking route short. Snowy pavements slow you down; plan indoor breaks along the way.
  • Plan a warm meal. Our Otaru food guide has ideas for lunch or dinner in town.
  • Combine with Sapporo. From February 6 to 11, a Sapporo base lets you see the Snow Festival and Otaru on different evenings; see Sapporo in winter.

For a longer trip, see our Sapporo and Otaru 3-day itinerary and Hokkaido in February.

Day trip or overnight: lunch, one glass workshop and the canal at night

This is our suggested order for a winter visit, not an official route. On a day trip, arrive by late morning and start with lunch; our Otaru food guide has ideas. Keep the Sakaimachi Street walk short and pick one indoor glass-making activity rather than several. Stay for the canal after dark only if the snow and your train back allow it; the Snow Light Path candles are lit only on the event dates.

Workshops do not all work the same way. Taisho Glass, for example, offers glassblowing and glass-bead making with different rules on its official experience page (checked 20 October 2026): a blown piece cannot be taken home the same day and is collected later or delivered, while bead making takes walk-in participants on the day only, with no advance reservations. Whichever workshop you choose, count the session itself, any wait, and collection or delivery when you plan the day.

Staying the night, decide where dinner and the evening walk end and when you can check in, rather than racing for the last train; the trip back to the station can wait until the next morning. Our Otaru day trip guide covers routes and timing, and the Sapporo and Otaru 3-day itinerary shows a fuller plan.

Add the Tenguyama viewpoint

Tenguyama Ropeway requires a separate bus journey from Otaru Station. Check the November maintenance gap, winter fares and New Year early closing before adding a summit or evening-view visit.

For railway and science displays, compare Otaru Museum Main Building’s winter exhibits, admission and front-entrance access. It is separate from the Canal Building, and winter brings outdoor-display and entrance restrictions.
